You are both the author of your own happiness and the architect of your own prison.

Captain Australia’s Crime Fighting Journal, Entry#51

As I continue to look after my family, I don’t think that I will be able to get out on active patrol this weekend, but I will make a commitment to resume weekly patrols as we move into April.  I can’t disclose detail on the tragedy that my family has been through as it could potentially be tied back to certain records that might identify me and compromise my secret identity.  I can tell you that it’s been a serious and heart-breaking incident, but we’re going to pull through okay.

Love does that for you, it gives you strength, an anchor that carries you through the difficult times in your life.

When I think of my wife and my son, my heart swells with love.  They are my motivation and my inspiration.  They make me a better man.

In the meantime, I’ve been corresponding with a young man who is grappling with depression and direction in his life.  I will respect his privacy and not give any specific detail, but I’d like to share one thing that might help any of you dealing with depression – something that I could see clearly in him:

You are both the author of your own happiness and the architect of your own prison.

So much of our suffering is self-imposed.  So much of our self-view is distorted.  My impression of this person is that he is a fine young man, with a decent heart, and a kind of wounded passion for life.  He’s just been beaten down by the confusing bombardment of expectations and priorities that life forces on him, and his perspective has become warped.  I have great hopes for his eventual happiness, and am working with him to help find his path.

If you think that I can help you, please reach out.  I’d be very grateful for a practical opportunity to do a Good Deed – so if you are in Australia and know a villain that needs punching or a dispute that needs negotiating, please make contact with me.  (helpme@captainaustralia.net).

I’m sorry about the lack of patrolling this month after the injury of my videographer and my family tragedy.  As a compromise, this weekend, I will tell you more of the story that leads up to me becoming Captain Australia.  If you want to get up-to-speed, you can read the previous Chapters below:
