Side-bar: you can make a difference today by helping the Salvation Army

by Captain Australia on February 25, 2010

I’d urge you to watch the video below, where you will meet Janet, a lovely indigenous lady, living on the streets of Brisbane.  She had been struck by a car the week before, and was quite casually accepting of her injuries and her fate.  She seemed to see homelessness and poverty as her birth-right (which I think should shame us all).

There are tens of thousands of homeless in Australia today, including families with children.  They rely on organisations like the Salvation Army to give blankets, food, crisis support as well as helping where possible to transition into more permanent living arrangements.

If you can, visit www.everydayhero.com.au/captain_australia and donate a few dollars.  I know it may not seem like much to you, but don’t allow apathy or cynicism to stop you – for one thing, it may just feed a hungry child.  Every act of kindness creates echoes – even your small good deed takes a step toward making the world a better place.

If it seals the deal, I am willing to take requests from donators – for example, you may want me to approach a local political figure and question them on a matter of policy, or you may want me to run 20km around Brisbane in full costume.  (Obviously we’ll scale the nature of the challenge to the size of the donation).

Donations are completely safe and secure and go directly to the Salvation Army, a registered Australian charity.  (Info all there on the donation portal).

Your friend,

Captain Australia
